Calderdale Wind Farm: Has Natural England and the Environment Agency rung a death knell for the project?

Last year Calderdale Inside Out highlighted warnings that development on Walshaw Moor could damage peat and affect flood risk, now the Environment Agency says it has still not seen modelling to assess the wind farm’s flood impact, and Natural England says ecological problems may be impossible to compensate for.

Just over a year ago Calderdale Inside Out interviewed one of the world’s leading peat scientists, Richard Lindsay, and he was unequivocal in his condemnation of Calderdale’s proposed windfarm:-

“Construction of a wind farm on relatively undisturbed peat produces no net carbon benefit.”

And now the Environment Agency and Natural England have parked their tanks on Calderdale Energy Park’s lawn.

New correspondence released by campaign group Peatland Alliance shows that the Environment Agency has so far reviewed only the developer’s baseline hydraulic model: that’s the data showing existing flood conditions.
