Analytics

We use Ghost’s first-party analytics to understand how people use Calderdale Inside Out and which stories are most useful or engaging.

Ghost’s native analytics are designed to operate without conventional tracking cookies.

When a member is logged in, Ghost may associate some activity with that member’s account so that we can understand how subscribers engage with our journalism.

If we introduce additional analytics or tracking services in future, we will update this policy and, where required, seek consent.

Cookies

Ghost’s native analytics do not rely on conventional tracking cookies.

Other essential cookies or similar technologies may be used where necessary for functions such as signing in, managing memberships or operating the website.

  • handling complaints or corrections
  • establishing, exercising or defending legal claims

Journalistic material may sometimes be subject to specific legal protections or exemptions under data-protection law.

Our lawful basis for using information

Depending on the circumstances, we process personal information because:

  • you have given your consent, for example when subscribing to receive newsletters;
  • it is necessary to perform a contract, such as administering a paid membership;
  • we have a legitimate interest, such as operating the publication, communicating with readers, maintaining security, understanding use of our journalism and keeping appropriate business records; or
  • we have a legal obligation to retain or disclose particular information.

Where we rely on legitimate interests, we consider those interests against the rights and privacy of the people concerned.

How long do we keep information?

We keep personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, or where we have a legal, regulatory or legitimate reason to retain it.

For example:

  • subscriber information is normally retained while your membership is active;
  • certain financial records may need to be retained for tax and accounting purposes;
  • editorial correspondence may be retained where it forms part of our journalistic records;
  • if you unsubscribe, we may retain limited information necessary to record and respect that preference.

Who do we share information with?

We do not sell subscriber or reader information.

We may share personal information with organisations that help us operate Calderdale Inside Out, including:

  • Ghost, our publishing and membership platform;
  • payment processors where paid subscriptions are used;
  • email or technical service providers;
  • professional advisers where reasonably necessary;
  • regulators, courts or public authorities where required by law.

These organisations only receive information where there is a legitimate reason for them to process it.

Some organisations that provide services to us may operate internationally.

Where personal information is transferred outside the UK, we rely on appropriate legal safeguards required by UK data-protection law.

Depending on the circumstances, UK data-protection law gives you rights including the right to:

  • ask for a copy of personal information we hold about you;
  • ask us to correct inaccurate information;
  • ask us to delete information in certain circumstances;
  • restrict or object to certain uses of your information;
  • withdraw consent where processing is based on consent; and
  • request transfer of certain information where applicable.

Some rights may be limited where information is being processed for journalistic purposes or where another legal exemption applies.
